Module 1 - Introduction

In this module we talk about classic Business Analysis techniques. While these techniques didn’t make the cut for our top 7 most powerful techniques, they are techniques that should be in every Business Analysts toolbox.

Run time: 8 minutes

Module 2 - MOST Technique

The MOST technique is an incredible business analysis framework but also scales down to the project or Agile User Story Map level. This technique aligns an organization's mission with strategies on a project or helps populate an Agile Story Board or Product Backlog. It is considered one of the most powerful techniques for understanding the organization's mission, aligning goals to that mission, building strategies that align with goals, and determining tactics or steps needed to deliver strategies.

Run time: 39 minutes

Module 3 - Functional Decomposition Diagram (FDD)

The FDD is an effective tool in ensuring capabilities and requirements are aligned. The analysis benefit comes when the analyst can meaningfully break down a current system or possible solution into smaller more manageable components. FDD helps avoid the orphan features that don't trace back to the capability. The FDD ensures that capabilities are also aligned back to the business solution. FDD builds the Agile User Story Map (USM). FDD is effective at building test plans and acceptance criteria.

Run time: 36 minutes

Module 4 - Salience Model

A stakeholder salience model is a relatively new framework for stakeholder analysis. The model identifies the importance of stakeholders and prioritizes their needs and expectations. The salience models prioritizes stakeholder interests, enhances communication, mitigates risks, improves decision making, and aligns with organizational change management.

Run time: 21 minutes

Module 5 - CATWOE

CATWOE is a problem identification and analysis technique. CATWOE provides a structured approach to analyzing a problem or situation, helping to identify and explore its dimensions. CATWOE encourages brainstorming, holistic analysis, define decision making channels, and fosters better communication with the team and stakeholders.

Run time: 19 minutes

Module 6 - SCAMPER

The SCAMPER technique is a helpful tool for coming up with ideas and creative solutions for any product. It's commonly used for developing new products or finding opportunities to enhance product capabilities, features, and functions. This technique is great at shaking up your thinking and moving you from the current state to a possible future state when considering a product or service.

Run time: 32 minutes

Module 7 - Customer Journey Mapping

Customer journey mapping helps understand how customers interact with a product or service. It identifies important touch points and areas for improvement, highlighting any issues so they can be fixed to enhance the customer experience. This is an excellent technique for developing empathy with a product’s customers and is amazing for process improvement.

Run time: 28 minutes

Module 8 - Nuisance Scale

A nuisance scale is a tool to measure how bothersome a problem is. This technique creates a collaborative environment for prioritizing problems and understanding each team member's view point. It's a great way to spark conversation and help prioritize customer issues during sprint planning. It’s a versatile technique that can be used in many different situations for prioritization.
